Sediment monitoring

Itaipu's Reservoir Division has 15 sediment monitoring stations strategically located in the main rivers of Paraguay and the Brazilian states Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul, which flow into the lake of Itaipu.

These stations cover an area of about 147,000 km², therefore, making 92%of the Itaipu HPP incremental drainage area (160,767 km²). If we consider the average annual flow in the HPP's dam, stations then cover 97% of all the reservoir net inflow.

Through automatic measuring equipment combined with telemetry technology for data transmission, all information hourly-basis measured in the field is transmitted to the company's office in Foz do Iguaçu, thus allowing the sediment transport monitoring in real time hundreds of miles from where data was generated.

This monitoring enables to estimate the development’s useful life, as well as to identify in which watersheds of the drainage area there are intensified erosive processes.
